Sarah Fragoso began her paleo journey in 2008. She somehow manages to juggle three boys (Coby, Jaden and Rowan), her husband John, training at Norcal Strength and Conditioning, and her blog. Sarah also recently published a cookbook, Eveyday Paleo. She managed to squeeze in some time to be this month's Featured Chef, and created some amazing recipes for healthy summer eats for the family!

Q: How did you get involved in cooking to begin with? Was it something you learned to love early on or did you come to it later?

A: Growing up, I spent a lot of time in the kitchen with my mom and one of my first memories is sitting on the counter with her and helping to stir something we were making together while she let me hold her favorite wooden spoon. I grew up cooking and creating meals together with my family and after learning about eating paleo, my passion turned to creating fast, family friendly and healthy meals.


Q: Why is eating grass-fed meat and sustainably-caught fish different? How does it affect your cooking?

A: It's different because not only am I feeding my family the best food I possibly can but I'm also actively supporting a more sustainable way of living and contributing to a happier and healthier environment. Cooking grass-fed meat and sustainable-caught fish affects my cooking by bringing me emotionally closer to the source of my food, I feel more connected to what we are eating and appreciative of the people who were involved with the process of bringing our food to the table.


Q: Is it just about health? Or is there more to it than that?

A: Much more to it. Knowing that the animals have been raised in a healthy and humane environment just feels right and my children realize that this is how it should be done which I think is so important to pass on to our younger generation. And of course it's also about taste! Grass-fed meat simply tastes better.


Q: How did you learn about grass-fed meat?

A: Growing up in the country I learned early on about the difference between grass-fed, pasture raised animals vs. conventionally farmed animals. Not until I was an adult did I realize how important eating grass-fed meat is for our health.


Q: Why is it so important to have the right ingredients?

A: Having the right ingredients can turn an ordinary meal into an extraordinary meal.


Q: What are the most important keys to success for the home chef?

A: To be prepared and to plan ahead. If you want to stay committed to creating healthy meals at home for you family, taking a few extra minutes on the weekend to make a plan for the week will save you time and money and the home chef will feel empowered and confident when a plan is in place.


Q: What are your best tips for home cooking?

A: Do not be afraid of your kitchen! So often people feel as if they just can't cook. Follow recipes, practice, learn basic knife skills, and decide to have fun!


Q: What is your favorite recipe using grass-fed meat?

A: My favorite recipe would have to be one of my recent creations called Smokey Roast.
